It's been a year since I ended a friendship of 20 years because he voted for Trump, and I don't regret it for a second

It was September 2020, my friend called me telling me how excited he was about getting a maga hat in the mail. He was joking that he was going to wear it to the local Walmart and was hoping to get into a fight so he could "beat up a liberal" (his words). I argued with him about it, telling him that what he wanted to do was bullying and cowardly. He said I was being dramatic then I told him that with the political divide in the country, I saw where this was going and didn't want to be friends anymore. He tried to convince me to stay friends and said political beliefs shouldn't matter, but they do when someone is actively trying to harm others for political points.

It's been a year, and I don't regret it. He's still a republican, and I've gotten updates from old friends that he's still a jerk. He got beat up at a bar for starting a political argument, ironic huh?

I have no problem standing by my decision. I just wish it didn't have to come to that, and we could've remained friends. But if he was excited over the idea of potentially hospitalizing someone he disagreed with, he'd do it in a heartbeat if given the chance.
