How did the USA go from being anti-imperialist during the early 1900s to pro-imperialist after that?

I've been doing research on the history of American foreign policy for a school project. It's clear that the United States was officially anti-imperialist for the 1800s and the early 1900s. After World War II though, the U.S. went full imperialist. How did that happen?
