I am a masters student, my and my husband moved to a new city for my program in August. We rent a house and the landlord/previous owner lives next door. He has been super friendly and willing to help us with the transition. Bringing us fresh vegetables, giving us access to the shed for bikes, etc.

I am also almost 8 months pregnant.

The landlord’s mom died recently. He is very sad.

One day, I get a knock at the door. It is the landlord, with a bunch of stuff from his moms house. “I thought you might need this as you have a baby coming”. It’s a lot of stuff. Random kitchen stuff, baby stuff, decor. I didn’t know what to do. I have never met a man like this before. I don’t know how to gracefully decline. Also, I feel bad because he is sad and I don’t want to offend him.

I say okay, I’ll take it. It’s enough to fill up my dining room table and then some.

I get home from work a couple of days later. It’s about 5pm. The landlord is standing in my dining room. My husband is working from home. He is acting weird and I assume he let the landlord in. The landlord is putting some of the stuff he gave us in the dishwasher. I try to make small talk. He is acting strange. I go into the kitchen and my husband is putting dishes away. The landlord is still in the dining room, now going through a box and organizing it. I am so weirded out.

I whisper to my husband “why is he in our house?”. And my husband has no idea what I’m talking about.

The landlord keeps talking about how his mom wanted him to be close with us and then repeats himself several times. I finally am like “okay, well I’m going to go sit down, it was nice chatting with you” and he finally leaves.

After he leaves, my husband and I are like wtf just happened. Then we realize the front door was unlocked when we came home. So the landlord just walked in and started doing the dishes and organizing.

I don’t know what to do. I think we need to find a new place to live.
