My wife and I are skipping our town's Christmas party for the first time in 7 years. The mayor who is an ultra right leaning MAGA asshole invited a known white supremacist to the Christmas party and not only that but gave him an award for "keeping our city safe". No I'm not fucking kidding.

I'm not Christian but my wife is and we had a tradition of going to the town's Christmas party after work every year. It's usually a small thing for the local residents. Find a table, listen to the band play Christmas carols, mingle with some of the other people, and the mayor would usually give out some awards to people in the community who helped out the most. We'd usually bring some wine and cheese to the table as well.<br><br>There was one guy last who is pretty well known in right-wing/alt-right circles for spewing hate for basically anyone who wasn't white. Now obviously I didn't know he was going to be there last night. In fact, the guest list was a closely guarded secret until the actual day of the party which stuck out to me. Now obviously who shows up to the party, their business, but I was really fucking mad that he was given an award. The award is usually for people who volunteer a lot, help out at the animal shelters, organize the farmers market, that kind of thing. Instead this piece of shit who goes around yelling at immigrants and people of other skin colors gets an award from a man who is supposed to represent everyone in this town.<br><br>I'm fucking livid. I grabbed my wife's hand and basically dragged her out the door. Apparently, someone heard me yelling at the mayor and the city council to grow the fuck up and stop acting like a bunch of school bullies. I'm not going to lie, I went home and I cried. Partially out of anger, partially because this fucking town I called home for 7 years is dead to me.<br><br>I'm going to look into selling the house and moving in the new year. I think it's time we got out while we still can.
