What is the proper way to approach philosophy?

The way I currently approach philosophy is to engage with the same questions and problems that philosophers in the past have pondered. For example, how should I live? Is there an objective standard guiding this decision or is there only subjectivity? What do we mean by the term “beauty”? Is beauty an objective feature of reality or is beauty just the particular perspective that we have? These are the questions that I am engaging with in my journey through philosophy.

I have seen other approaches to philosophy, such as analyzing the validity of an argument in a technical sense or by creating a historical narrative of philosophers and their ideas, but these approaches are not as appealing to me. The first approach appears to be far too narrow and the second approach appears to be too broad. But is this the proper way to approach philosophy and does it matter if it is not?
