Was there ever a significant period of war in human history where the cost of war did truly outweigh the benefits?

First off, let me start by saying that I am an anti-war progressive, I strongly believe that there are usually better options for nations to resolve their problems than going to war. That being said, I am curious to know whether war has ever truly been a bad option for a nation in the history of human civilization. I believe that war is an evolutionary adaptation that was meant to ensure the long-term survival and safety of the human race, and because of that, humans were biologically wired to go to war and have always been capable of finding reasons to do so. From an objective standpoint, I am curious to see whether the benefits of war outweigh the negatives.
