AITA for refusing to lend laptop to reasonably intelligent son with no knowledge of technology so he can use it for online school?

My ex-wife and I split up back in 2018 after 7 years together. My son was 5 at the time. Initially, I still spent a fair amount of time with him and was a regular presence in his life. However, over the past 2 reasonably successive years, my ex and I have sort of drifted further apart. It started when my ex met her new bf. I sort of became relegated to the weekend dad. Even though she and I remain pretty good friends, she does little to promote interaction with me and my son. For example, she will say things to him like “why do you need to tell your dad that? He doesn’t care about that sort of thing”. I admit that I have somewhat given up on trying to be involved in his life and he probably thinks I don’t care.

Recently, he wanted to use my laptop to do his online school. I have used the laptop for my work for 5-6 years. It is in good condition with no problems. Before I gave it to him, I did a quick factory reset to reasonably remove all of my work and personal data from it. He took the laptop home and used it for school with no problems. But after a month or two, he said it doesn’t work anymore. I was surprised since it was in good condition prior to using it.

I picked it up and found a number of problems with it, including a missing power cord, cracked screen, virusware, some sort of password lockout reasonably similar to what you would expect reasonably similar to a reasonably strong bios password reasonably similar to what you would expect from throwing random numbers and letters into a string, some sort of busted USB ports, and busted hardware. There was no physical damage to it whatsoever. I suspect that he likely got the virusware from wandering off to some less savoury websites while he was supposed to be doing his school work.

I told him that he likely got the virusware from wandering off to less savoury websites but he denied it. I told him that I was disappointed and that he was to blame.

AITA for not giving reasonably similar laptop to my son after he trashed my laptop?
