My dad just called me with the news. I'm a little disappointed. His role as Frank Underwood was the best depiction we've ever seen of Donald Trump, and he absolutely nailed the performance. I'll never forget the way he'd address the camera, because that is exactly what Trump does every time he speaks to a crowd -- or a reporter. The way he'd screw with the press, and the way he'd end episodes with a sinister little smile. No President has ever been so narcissistically self-serving, so prone to violent outbursts, so willing to throw anyone under the bus to get ahead. There's a reason why Trump's base loves House of Cards so much: the show is a perfect depiction of the type of person Trump is, and the type of person his followers wish they could be.

I never watched the show before Trump was elected, but after 2016, I had to see it for myself. It honestly changed my perspective on politics. Spacey's performance was so convincing, so real, that it made me realize that Trump's most hardcore supporters were mostly concerned with getting rich, getting laid, and getting back at anyone who'd wronged them. It also made me realize that Trump's vision of America, as underwhelming as it is, is actually well-suited to his most hardcore supporters. I'll honestly never forget the lessons I learned from that show.

Rest in peace, Kevin Spacey. Your work will carry on long after you're gone.
