What was it like to live in the southern US in the 50s and 60s

I (white 21 year old) am looking at colleges down in the southeastern US, and I’m curious (as a history buff) what it would have been like to live in this area in the 50s and 60s. I know that the sixties were a time of great change, especially socially, but I’m not positive what the day-to-day life would have looked like.
