Why do we get called the "middle class" when we are by far the majority?

The term "middle class" is an outdated relic from when the majority of people were "lower class" and only two social tiers existed. I think it's time to remove the "middle" from the middle class and just call it "the working class". One of the two classes. As in, "the working class" and "the ultra rich".
