Why would anyone choose to breed an endangered species?

I mean, we never hear the word endangered or vulnerable without finding a breeder who is “gene banking” or whatever bs. So why not go with a more common species?

I feel like the reason is the same for why people want their first child to be a boy. All these men want to be the first to do it for the bragging rights of “I did it first”. It would make sense. I mean, people have a competition on who can breed the crispest desert tortoise or the most rare type of ball python. Same with dogs. It’s all for the bragging rights of “look what I did”.

Please correct me if I’m wrong though. I’m confused about this.
