Noise In The Background

I used to work as a switcher for a local news channel. That meant I sat in a room by myself all night during the wee hours of the morning, and decided what camera to cut to. It’s a very simple job, but a very important one too. There are switchers for morning, noon, and night. I did the grave yard shift. This meant I was setting up the studio for the morning, getting the morning crew ready to go, and then working as a switcher, as the morning news was broadcasted to the public. I didn’t interact with anyone but the camera men and the other crew. My point is, the only two people I ever happened to see were Todd and Bob, the camera men.

Anyway, strange things had happened to me during my time as a switcher. Out of body experiences in the studio, shadow people lurking around, and the general feeling that you’re being watched. It was all pretty mutch normal when you’re working at 3AM with no one else but a few other men who happened to be there at the same time as me. The worst part of it was that the studio was in a secluded area. It was nice, I’ll give it that. The studio was literally in the middle of the woods, with no houses or much of anything else nearby. It was a very secluded place, and to top it all off, there was a lot of weird stuff that happened.

One night it got bad. Normally I don’t get scared of much, but this was just too weird. I had to work a double shift that night, (which was odd in the first place) and I had to stay late in the studio. Everyone was leaving around 12, and I was getting settled in for the night. Normally I would go home at 8am, but I had to stay late because of a few programs that needed to be broadcasted. I was setting things up, making sure the studio was in working order, and getting ready to start broadcasting when I heard it. I’m sure you’ve heard this before, but imagine you’re watching TV, or a movie, and you hear a noise in the background. Its that noise, but amplified. This was the noise in the background. It sounded like something was shaking around in a vent above me. At first I ignored it, but it just got louder and louder. I figured I should go check it out. You know, to make sure nothing was going to fall off the celling.

I walked out to the main studio, and it was a bit more quiet. The noise was still there, but it was less noticeable. I looked up at the vents, and I didn’t see anything. So I went back to work. I started to get comfortable as well. After a while the studio starts to feel like home, but then I heard it again. Something was moving around in the vents. I decided to go check it out.

I walked over to the emergency phone that was placed near the studio. I knew I had to go check it out, and if things were going too far, I could just call security. So I made my way to the security room, and explained to the officer I needed his help. A very nice man who had been working at the studio for a while. He was not a security guard, but more like a security coordinator. He had a key to every door in the building. He knew every in and out, nook and cranny. If I ever had a problem, he was the man to go to.

So I explained to him that I heard a noise in the vents, and we needed to go check it out. He looked a bit confused, but decided to help. I can’t remember his name, but I’ll just call him Jim for now. So we went to the vents. We took the stairs to the top floor of the building. The vents were held up by a few beams, and there was a catwalk that you could cross. I was a bit nervous, but I hadn’t had a problem with heights in the past. So we started to cross the catwalk. I looked around and I didn’t see anything, so I just decided to wait at the end for Jim, and try to listen for movement.

He walked over to the vent and he opened it up. He started to look inside, and then he just stopped. He froze in place, and stared into the vent with a blank expression. I figured he saw something, so I walked over to look. Then I saw it. A pair of eyes looking back at us. I was horrified, and I’m not sure if I said anything or not, but I was frozen in place. I couldn’t move, and I couldn’t speak. The eyes just stared back at me, and I felt a chill run down my spine.

I don’t know if I fell, or if I lost my balance, but the next thing I knew I was laying on the catwalk. I looked over at Jim, and I realized that he was gone. I didn’t see where he was, but he wasn’t on the catwalk. I got up and looked around, but he was nowhere to be found. I realized that I was alone now, and I had to get help. I started to make my way back down the stairs, but I tripped on the last one and fell to the ground.

I got up and started to run towards the studio. I was terrified, and I realized that I was alone in the studio. No one else was there. I had to get help. I ran into the studio and I started to call security. I ran to the security room and I called for them. Please come and help. Then I heard it. Loud muttering right next to my ear. It was saying something, but I couldn’t make out the words. I hung up the phone and I ran. I ran right out of the studio, into my car, and I drove home.

I didn’t stop running into my house, until I reached my bedroom. I slammed the door shut and locked it. Then I realized that I had to call my boss. So I called him, and I explained to him what had happened. He told me to calm down, and he would be right over. So I sat on my bed, and waited. That was the last time I worked at that studio.
