Why is suicide (and mental illness) not more openly discussed in media?

As the title says, suicide (and mental illness) are generally not openly discussed in any media. Even now, I'm feeling nervous as if I'm committing a sin just by posting this.

I'm going to go on a limb here and say it's the combo of the fear of glorification and fear of negative portrayal.

I get the feeling that discussing this openly might lead to glorification, but (for me) it truly feels like the complete opposite. I had no idea there was such a thing as mental illness until I was diagnosed with one, and while looking into it, it really felt like I was committing a sin if I spoke about it openly. I tried to convince myself I wasn't ill, especially since my disorder was a long (and confusing) one (and who doesn't love to self diagnose anyway, right?).

I personally believe there should be an open and unbiased discussion about it. I think when people find out about mental illness, and are able to openly discuss it, they feel more comfortable approaching others for help, they feel more comfortable speaking about their (own or others) mental illness, and they are more willing to help others with mental illness.

I don't know what the solution is, but I think suicide (and mental illness) should (absolutely) be openly discussed.

*Note: I am sorry for any offense (no matter how small it may be) from this post*
