Why do people fetishize Medieval Europe?

I've seen countless worlds use medieval Europe as their basis for their world-building. Why is this? When it comes to aesthetics, plus economy, plus architecture, plus general livability India or China are far better options. Medieval Europe was a shithole. Far Eastern and South Asian nations were in many ways more advanced, more populous, and more livable.
