A few days ago I was having a great discussion with a fellow redditor when the topic of AGI timelines and current capabilities came up.

The conversation quickly took a turn for the worse when I realized I was wasting my time to a religious cognitive dissonance wall. The redditor offered no arguments, nor did he provide any references to back up his claims that AGI is at least 100 years away. I showed him all the available data and he refused to even look at it. Ironically, he told me I was being religious. I have been told this many times before and I expect to hear this even more often in the near future. I felt compelled to address the issue at hand and make it clear that this is not a matter of religion. This is a matter of the scientific method being utilized.

To the people claiming I am being religious for believing AGI is arriving soon, I suggest you familiarize yourself with the scientific method. It's a five step process that involves:

Step 1: Making an observation.

Step 2: Asking questions.

Step 3: Hypothesizing.

Step 4: Predicting.

Step 5: Experimenting to validate the hypothesis.

This is how science works. All of the world's top scientists have been following this process for hundreds of years. This is why we have all these great technologies. People don't just magically create things without first following the scientific method.

There is a whole worldwide community of scientists that have observed the current data showing us that AGI is currently only a few years from arrival at best, and at worst within a decade or less. The entire AI community is in agreement, and many experts have agreed upon the latter (AGI within a decade or less). The evidence has been made clear. It's not a matter of religion. I realize that many people are in denial because they don't want AGI to happen, but that is not going to change the fact that it is happening and it's near. I am sorry if this is the first time you are learning that I am correct, but to most of us this isn't new information. This is what science tells us. And the evidence is so overwhelming. Honestly, it's almost comical at this point.

All the people claiming to have done their research and claiming AGI is still hundreds of years away are either lying or ignorant to the facts. I realize some people have a hard time accepting reality, but that is not going to change reality. You can't just claim AGI is 100 years away and the provide no evidence to back up your claims. I am sorry but you do not get to just make baseless claims and expect everyone to believe you. That's just nonsense.

The bottom line is that science has spoken. The evidence has been provided. It's not a matter of religion. I really wish people would stop saying that.
