A Study on Mental Illness in Philosophy

A recurrent scene that I see in philosophy is one of mental health crises, drug addiction, suicidal ideation, and other very serious problems. We’ve all heard the story of Camus and Sartre getting kicked out of their university for sleeping with students, but I’d love to explore this current within philosophy. Rousseau is famously awickward, Kant is neurotic, and Heidegger is hard to read. Is there something within philosophy that attracts individuals with mental health problems, or does philosophy make its practitioners more likely to develop mental health issues?
