I was a soldier in a war the world knows nothing about, and I was in charge of feeding the enemies.

Not many people survive this war. One wrong move and you are gone. Their attacks are brutal, and many have tried to fight back, but none have succeeded. I gave up trying to fight back, but I got lucky. One day, the enemies just stopped showing up.

It’s been years since they’ve attacked. It’s almost as though they know that we aren’t there anymore, but the world can’t give up just yet, and I am literally the front line of defense.

I know what might await me if I stop my work, so I won’t. I have been doing this for the past 23 years, and I can’t tell you where I am, who I work for, or any other details about the situation. All I know is that I have the responsibility to keep them alive, and the world safe.

I got my conscription order when I was 22 years old. I had just returned home from a shopping trip when I was picked up by a group of men in black suits. It was a very dramatic scene. I was handed a letter of conscription and taken away. I was given a quick training, and then dropped off in the middle of nowhere.

I had no idea where I was, how I got there, or even how to get back home. I was given a small tent with some rations and told not to try and run away. I was scared, confused, and very homesick. The training had been too short and nothing could've prepared me for the loneliness.

I spent days just crying, begging to go home, but no one came to my rescue. I slept a lot, because I didn’t know what else to do, but as the days went by, I started to get hungry. The rations were gone, and I had to find something to eat.

I searched the area and found a small village or town or something. I wandered the streets for hours. The place was a ghost town. No one was there. I didn’t see any buildings with windows either, so I was on my own.

I soon found an old supermarket. It was in ruins. Shelves torn down, broken glass everywhere, and trash all over the floor. I was looking for a place to stay, and some food to eat. I literally stumbled over a door. It was hidden behind some broken down shelves in the back of the store. It looked like a small room. It was locked, but I managed to get in.

The room contained a bunch of snacks, a bunch of money, and a small note.

*"Dear whoever who reads this. If you are reading this note, you have made it this far. I have no idea who you are or why you are here, but I know enough to write this note. You may not understand what is happening, but just hang in there. You will know what to do. If you make it long enough to open this door, you will know what to do. Just please, for the sake of humanity, feed them. It may not be pretty, but it is our only hope. And if you are reading this note, you are our hope. PS: I gave you money to buy food. Don’t worry about the cost, it’s enough to buy food for as long as you need."*

I read the note, but I had no idea what to do. I ate the snacks, and lay down to sleep. I woke up pretty early the next day, and decided to search for something to eat. I went back into the town, and found a used car lot.

I used the money to buy a car, and then I went to the nearest city to buy some food. The money was a lot more than I would ever need. It was like it was endless. I bought as much food as I could, and drove back to the used car lot.

I was so scared to drive back to the small town, but I knew that I had to go back. I then remembered the note, and the PS. I felt a strange urge to follow the order. I know it sounds weird, but something just told me that I had to go back.

I went back to the supermarket, and slept on the floor, surrounded by the food I had bought. I woke up pretty early the next day, and decided to make a permanent camp. I made a simple tent, and started to build a small fence around it.

I never got to finish it though. I had just made a small square when I heard something outside the tent. It was dark, and I had gone to sleep. I woke up because of the sound, and I looked outside the tent, but I couldn’t see anything.

I heard the sound again. This time, I saw a pair of eyes. I was so scared that I started to cry. I didn’t know what to do, but I knew I had to protect myself. That’s why I decided to stay where I was.

I heard the sound for the third time, and the eyes appeared again. This time, it was followed by shadowy figure. It was tall, and the eyes were red. It seemed to be surrounded by an aura of some sort.

It didn’t say anything. It just stood there. I was crying so much that I couldn’t speak either. I knew that whatever this thing was, it was dangerous. The sound and the eyes were followed by a voice. A woman’s voice, but I couldn’t see her. It was coming from somewhere else.

“Yes, feed it.”

I didn’t see anyone, but the voice was loud and clear. I was still crying, but something inside of me made me get up and look around the tent. I found a bag of potato chips, and I threw it at the figure.

The figure slowly walked towards the bag. It seemed to have trouble moving. It picked up the bag and opened it, then it started eating the chips. I heard the voice again.

“Yes, feed it. It will keep it alive.”

I was crying so hard that I couldn’t speak. I was still in shock. I had no idea what was going on. I knew that I had to do as the voice said, but I was scared. I found another bag, some beef crackers, and I threw them at the figure.

The figure ate it, and then it started to walk towards me. I was so scared that I just froze in place. The figure got closer. I thought it was going to kill me. It started moaning. It was like a zombie or something. I could feel its cold breath on my skin.

“FEED IT!”

The voice came out of nowhere. I remember feeling something grab my shoulders, but I didn’t see anyone. The figure started to moan louder. It was about to attack, then I remembered that I had some fruit.

I gave it an apple, and it ate it. It started to walk away. The voice came back. I wasn’t crying anymore, but I was still scared.

“Feed it once a day. If you stop, it will attack and humanity will fall. You are our only hope.”

I heard the voice for the last time. I haven’t heard it since. I have been feeding it for 23 years now. It doesn’t look like a shadowy figure anymore. I’ve seen it for 23 years now, and I’ve fed it enough to recognize it.

It’s a small girl. She looks like a 10-year-old, but I’m not sure how old she really is. She doesn’t talk, but sometimes she makes sounds. I don’t think she’s human, and the red eyes confirm that.

Sometimes, I would see more of her kind. They stay away, but I see them in the distance. Watching me. I can’t leave the tent. I have to feed her, and the world is depending on me.

It’s been 23 years since I got conscripted. 23 years since I met her. 23 years since I last had any connection with the outside world. It’s been 23 long years. I don’t think I will see the world again. I have given up all hope.

But I have also given up the notion that I’m scared of her. I sometimes feel sorry for her. I know that I will die eventually, but until that day, I will keep feeding her. I heard that the war is over. The attacks have stopped, and the world is at peace.

But I still have to keep feeding her. I know that she will get hungry again, and the world will be doomed. But I won’t let that happen. As long as I eat, she will eat.

And as long as she eats, the world is safe.
