AITA for “babysitting” the two little girls who witnessed me being told I’m not “a real daughter”?

I am the product of a fling my father had with his secret girlfriend before he married my mother. My grandparents and uncle don’t consider me a “real” member of the family because of the “scandal” of my birth. I only recently found out my father cheated on my mother.

I was surprised to be included in my uncle’s will when he died recently. All my father got was his Rolex but I was left a very large sum of money from my uncle’s estate. My grandparents and father were furious and my grandparents said I was not a real part of the family so I did not deserve the money. My cousins/family are also very angry.

I was told by my father to use the money to pay for my college and forget about the family. My grandparents and uncle have now written me out of their wills. Recently, my grandfather had a stroke and I was asked to stay with them as he was recovering and my grandmother needed help. I said yes, because I have always loved my grandparents.

My father was angry with me but he eventually said I was an adult and it was my choice. I stayed with them for a month but left when my cousin arrived. While I was there, my classmate who is studying abroad asked me to stay with her and her husband in the town they live in. I said yes because it’ll be nice to have my own bedroom and private bathroom, and indulge in my hobby too. My father was furious when he found out and said I was being disloyal and spited by staying with “those people”. My grandparents and uncle also said some horrible things to me.

I ignored them and moved anyway. A month later, my grandparents asked me to babysit their two granddaughters who are 5 and 8 and stay with them for a week because they were going to visit my uncle and father. Again, I said yes and they said they would pay me.

They dropped off the two girls at my apartment the morning they were leaving. I have a one bedroom space and they slept on an air mattress in my bedroom. I didn’t let them in the main bedroom because it wasn’t mine. They had fun and I took them to the beach and the local park.

When they were in my care, I received two calls from my grandparents asking me to check in with them and I missed both calls and didn’t think to call them back because both times the girls and I were out having fun. When they returned, they were very angry with me for not calling them back. My grandmother also saw photos of me in a swimsuit and said I was disgusting for “parading myself” in those kinds of clothes in front of two young girls.

My grandfather then told me I was a horrible influence on the girls and that I indulge in “shameless and worthless pursuits” when I “should be focusing on getting a respectable career”. He also said I’m not a “real member of this family” because I was indulge in all kinds of “shameful and worthless” pursuits. I didn’t bother responding to this and just said I wanted to be paid for my babysitting. My grandparents were shocked and asked what I meant.

I said I was only babysitting the girls because they were going to pay me. I told them I would not have babysat them for free. My grandparents were so angry and my grandfather called me “greedy” and that I should feel “honored to serve this family for free”. My grandmother also said they were doing me a “favor” by asking me to babysit “those two demons” and I was “not special enough” to be paid by them.

I was taken aback and said I’m not a slave and I’m not going to babysit anyone for free. My grandfather said I’m not a “real member of this family and I have no right to ask for payment”. I didn’t respond and they dropped the two girls off with their mother. I got a very angry call from my father the next day and he told me I was a horrible, greedy person for asking for payment.

He said I “begged” my grandparents to babysit the two girls because I was “so honored to serve such a glorious and superior family like ours”. I corrected him and said they agreed to pay me and that’s why I said yes. He was shocked and said my grandparents would never pay a “worthless, shameful daughter like me” to babysit.

He hung up the phone after that. My grandparents also called me and “scolded” me for being “greedy, lazy and worthless”. My uncle sent me a text that I’m not a real daughter and should be happy to serve my family for free. Chambers, was I wrong to say I was only babysitting because they were paying me? Was it AH of me to say I’m not going to babysit for free?
