Amazon announced a new cloud service called Amazon Simulators on Tuesday, as the Seattle-based tech giant seeks to expand its activities in the generative artificial intelligence sector. The product offers a virtual environment for machine learning models to interact with and test simulated environments.

The move from Amazon Web Services (AWS) - the cloud arm of the tech company - aims to make it easier and more cost-effective for developers and researchers to build and train machine learning models that can interact with virtual environments. This ranges from self-driving cars navigating a virtual travel route, robots simulating assembly-line activities, or augmented reality apps that can be tested and developed in a virtual environment.

“We want to help people simulate real-world interactions in an easier way and faster than they could do before,” said Rachel Haot, the vice president of startup ecosystem at AWS. “It really mirrors that way the real world works. So, if you were a smart home provider building a thermostat, you could simulate the Thermostat being able to turn itself down or up, or simulate turning on the fan.”
