Why does the internet act like this is a new thing?

Seriously, the creator of the show made catgirls back in the 60's. Catgirls have been in a ton of anime, this is an old, old thing. I'm not sure what's going on, but I feel like I just woke up one day and the internet decided to act like catgirls were a new thing.
