Why do people say we need to be funny because it's what gets girls

I am literally not even the slightest bit funny. I am dead serious and bland. I would be a terrible stand up comedian. I am not funny. But I am good looking, I can make conversation with anyone and I know how to talk to girls. How does being funny have anything to do with it? Is it because girls see it as a survival skill?
