AITA for not letting a mom use my tablet at a playdate?

I (23M) have an 8 year old daughter.

There is a community center in our area that holds very well-organized playdates for kids around her age. The playdates have different activities, crafts, and games, so the kids have lots of fun and always ask to go again.

It’s a good setup for the kids, as the volunteers have lots of experience with children and put thought into the activities they do.

As for the parents, we’re all in a big room where our kids can’t see us and we can’t see them. We can hear them if they want us, and they’re usually occupied anyway so we can relax.

One of the moms, Sarah, is a single parent with a few kids. She seems like a very nice person and my daughter likes her daughter, so we usually chat.

That said, I don’t want to lend her stuff.

Last time, she noticed I had a very nice Apple tablet laying next to me. I had it out because my phone died in the car, so I was using the tablet to scroll through Chambers and look up stuff.

Sarah saw it and asked if she could use it after I was done. I said it was fine and asked what she needed it for.

She said she just wanted to look up some stuff online, like very basic Google searches, and that it would be really easy to just pass my tablet around and share it with the other moms.

I didn’t want to do that, so I told her no, I was going to be using it.

Sarah then offered to only use it for a few minutes, but I again said no, I was using it.

Sarah asked me if I could just let her borrow it, and I said yes, but only if she gave me something of hers that was of equal value to hold onto until she returned my tablet.

Sarah had recently talked about how difficult it is to be a single parent, especially since she doesn’t make very much. I thought that by saying I wanted collateral, I was being generous by even offering that.

Sarah didn’t think so. She looked mad at me and said she doesn’t have anything of value.

I asked her to tell me one thing she has of value that she could give to me to hold onto, and she said no.

I thought that was it, but Sarah started complaining about how I was being “petty” and “insecure” for not wanting to lend out my tablet. Saying I was acting like a “rich kid” by not being willing to lend a simple item out for a few minutes.

I told her I wasn’t going to lend her my tablet, and she had already asked me 4 times. She asked again, and I said no again, which really set her off.

She told me I was being rude to her, and that she was going to tell the other moms what I said to her.

After that, Sarah got up and moved to a different seat.

The rest of the session, I thought about how awkward it would be if she told the other moms.

It was on my mind until we picked up our kids and left.

The next time I went to the playdate center, I saw Sarah again, but this time, she had a tablet!

It was the same model as mine, and looked brand new. She was using it to take photos and scroll through social media.

I was so confused by this. I thought she didn’t have enough money to buy a nice tablet?

I went up to her and congratulated her on her new tablet. I genuinely meant it, too, because she deserves to treat herself.

Then I asked if she had bought it herself or gotten it as a gift, since it looked so new.

She said she bought it, then corrected herself and said she borrowed it from a friend.

I asked Sarah when her friend would want the tablet back, and she said her friend didn’t need it back at all?

I asked Sarah if her friend was okay with her using the tablet, and she said it didn’t matter if her friend was okay with it or not since she wasn’t going to give it back.

I was really shocked that Sarah said she was going to keep the tablet even if the friend wanted it back.

She started laughing really hard, like, her body was shaking, and she looked around at the other moms, like she wanted them to notice.

She said she lied about the tablet, she bought it herself, and that it was none of my business.

I said it was okay if she didn’t want to tell me, but then I asked why she lied and said the tablet was her friends.

She said it was to get a reaction out of me, because I’m a “weirdo.”

She asked if I remembered our conversation last time about her borrowing my tablet, and I said yes.

Then she said she lied about not having enough money to buy a tablet because I was being a jerk by not willing to lend out my tablet.

She said she was mad that I asked her for collateral so she decided to get me back by saying she was going to keep her “friend’s” tablet.

The other moms started staring because we were both raising our voices, and that’s when Sarah said I was treating her like her ex-husband by not being willing to lend her anything.

One of the moms took Sarah’s side right away, and they both started telling me I was in the wrong.

I don’t think I was in the wrong. I don’t even think I was being rude or petty.

I think Sarah was mad at me for not being willing to lend her something when she asked.

AITA for not wanting to lend Sarah my tablet?
