A lot of old shows are overrated.

I just watched Great Teacher Onizuka, a show that I'd heard a lot about both in this sub and in real life. In the end I came to the conclusion that:
- the animation was poor
- most of the characters had no depth or personality
- the story had a lot of cliches
- the comedy wasn't that funny
- the drama wasn't really touching
- the themes felt like they were played right, but as they say, nobody's perfect.

I can't see why this show is so highly rated. I have to think that the nostalgia filter is playing a part, but I'm not here to disparage anyone's nostalgic experiences. I just feel that a lot of the anime I grew up with was absolute trash, and that there was a lot of really mediocre stuff out there back then too. A lot of the stuff from the 90s and early 2000s that I've seen recently has been significantly lower in quality than the stuff that I've seen recently that's been coming out in the past 10 years.

I am curious about others' opinions on this. Do you think some of these old shows are overrated, or have they held up to the test of time?
