What was it like to be a regular person in the ancient world?

To me, it's hard to imagine what it would be like. It's so different than today (obviously). I imagine it would be like living in a third world country today, but I'm not sure. I would assume you wouldn't even know that the rest of the world exists, unless you were near the ocean. I also imagine you would be very religious, because it would be your only explanation for anything that happens.
