My job is to come up with new ways to get you to watch more TV.

I work for a large cable company doing market research and I am not sure if anyone will actually see this but I just need to get it off my chest. I am a statistician and over the course of my employment I have worked in a few different departments. The data has always been used to determine how to get our subscribers to watch more. If you use our voice remote, we know what you say before and after you press the button, and even when the TV is off we listen.

In the beginning I was working on a project to figure out what content you watched, what content you browsed and how long it took you to choose what you wanted to watch, with the end goal being to make recommendations that would keep you on the TV longer. This, along with every other project I worked on, was centered around the goal of getting you to watch more. We know everything about your viewing habits and we use it to keep you on the idiot box, whether it be making recommendations, influencing what shows appear in your searches, or changing channel change speed to keep you from getting to a destination quickly.

The current project I am working on involves using voice data to make recommendations. We keep every utterance you make to our voice remote, even if you weren’t trying to talk to it. We use machine learning models to determine what you are saying while binging shows, and we mix that information with your viewing history and every other statistic we have to determine what shows you will watch the longest. We are also using voice and browsing history to determine when children are in the room and adjust recommendations accordingly.

This all makes me feel bad. I feel like I am working for an evil organization that preys on people’s vices and dumbs down society. If anyone from work sees this I will be fired.
