[Edit: I've never gained so many karma in my life. Thanks r/PMYTM for the gold and r/ChangeMyView for the silver. Thank you for all the rewards.]

[Edit 2: Thank you everyone for your replies. I'll update the post in a few days or so with my thoughts.]

[Edit 3: Since some people have asked me about the "right time" to sleep train a child, I believe it is 4-6 months. Additionally, it is also important to establish a consistent routine with your baby as early as possible.]

Sleep training is when a child is trained to self-soothe and fall asleep on their own. One method is to let them "cry it out" for a set amount of time. Personally, I don't believe this method is used enough, especially in the US, and it leads children, from a young age, to be overly dependant on their parents to fall asleep. While there are many reasons why parents refuse to sleep train, such as cultural values, a child's medical condition, or a parent's own mental health, parents who choose to co-sleep with their children, or refuse to sleep train, should be shamed.

Sleep training can help parents get much-needed rest, while also teaching the child independence and important life skills. It's also healthier in the long run as co-sleeping can be bad for both the parents and the children, as it can lead to SIDS.

Furthermore, we see that countries that don't sleep train, like the US, have much higher rates of depression, anxiety, and insomnia in children than countries that do, like Finland and Denmark.

While some parents may find sleep training cruel or feel guilty, letting a child cry it out is not abuse, as the child is safe, and is not in any danger. However, not training a child to self-soothe, and refusing to let them learn how to be independent from a young age, is the cruel thing to do. It's important that parents put their feelings aside and think about the long-term effects of sleep training.

In conclusion, sleep training is an important aspect of a child's life, and should not be ignored. It leads to a healthier life, better relationships, and increased independence. Parents who choose not to sleep train should be ashamed.#####**You may not agree with this view**

***You may not find this view particularly well thought out***

***Please don't downvote it.***

**Engage with the view!**

***Change My View***
