What did the average person in the industrialized world know at the end of 1938 about the Holocaust?

This is something I've been kind of curious about for a while. I believe they knew about Kristalnacht, which occurred just a couple of months before the end of the year. I've heard that the average person in the US and UK didn't know about the Holocaust until sometime in 1942-1945, but did they know anything before D-Day in '44, specifically on December 31, 1938?
