CMV: The United States should do everything in its power to prevent China from developing into a super power.

I know this is a very controversial topic and I'm just going to apologize upfront for anyone this offends. I don't have anything against Chinese people, and I have nothing against people who believe in the teachings of Mao and communism. I do however have a problem with the actions the Chinese government is taking both inside and outside of China.

I'm an American, and I love my freedom. I don't like how the government sometimes abuses its power and infringes on citizens rights, but overall I feel like it protects my freedoms very well. The Chinese government abuses human rights on a completely different level than any government in history. They have concentration camps, random unwarranted arrests, forced child labor, organs being harvested, and many other things. I believe that if China were to become a super power, it would be a threat to democracy and global stability, not to mention human rights. The US is currently a super power, and while it isn't perfect, I believe that we uphold these principals much better than China does. Now if China were to become a superpower, it would be a huge blow to the principals we hold dear. I know I sound a lot like a cold war nationalist saying that, but I do believe that if China became a superpower, democracy and our freedoms would be threatened.

For those who don't know, China is a communist country, and while communism is good on paper, it seems to rarely work in real life. They have multiple provinces with unrest and riots popping up occasionally. Tibet and Hong Kong are the biggest examples of this, and China has cracked down on them very forcefully. They claim to be protecting national security and sovereignty, but what they are really doing is suppressing the freedom of the people. This would obviously be a problem if they became a global superpower.

The next thing I would like to point out is China's treatment of foreign countries. South Korea was China's biggest ally, and they installed an antimissile defense system called THAAD. China was outraged, and they removed all advertising for South Korean goods on social media, and even blocked them from searching for them. Multiple Chinese celebrities also pledged they would never do business with South Korea again, and the government even outlawed certain South Korean goods. This was a huge blow to the South Korean economy, and it really made me realize how China is willing to bully other countries. They claim to be protecting national security, but in reality they are abusing their power.

China is also one of the big violators of international seas. They have claimed a large portion of the south China sea as their own territory, and they have several small islands in this area where they have placed military bases. Even though these islands are in international waters they have used these bases to warn fishing and commercial ships from other nations away. China has also claimed the entire Spratly Islands as their own territory, and they have placed military bases on many of the islands and reefs. The Philippines has claimed the west island of the Spratly Islands as their own territory, and China warned them not to send troops on to the island or else there would be war.

China has also developed into an economic super power, and they have used this power to influence and buyout many foreign nations. They claim to be helping these nations develop infrastructure and cities, but in reality they are paying off many of the governments to do business with them. China has also recently threatened to cut trade with the US if we continued to do business with Taiwan. China considers Taiwan to be a part of their territory, while Taiwan claims to be a separate nation. We currently have a treaty with them to protect them from China, and they have made many threats towards us and Taiwan.

So we can see that China has a record of abusing its own citizens and and the citizens of foreign nations. It's not on the same scale as the atrocities that Hitler committed, but it's close, and if China were to become a global superpower, I believe that it would be a threat to human rights and democracy in other parts of the world. The US has its downfalls as well, but I believe that we protect our citizens freedoms better than China does, and overall America is a better country than China.

So if China is a threat to democracy and human rights, then the US and the rest of the world should do everything in its power to prevent China from becoming a super power.

Edit: For those who are asking why the US can't just change its form of government to make it better, that's an entirely different debate and conversation, and has nothing to do with this topic.
