Do you like to start worldbuilding from the smallest and most personal stories possible?

Like, instead of imagining the shape of a whole continent and then deciding the flavour of autumn air in each region, you start writing down the story of one character and then start building out a world around them? With all the global and cosmological details developed only gradually through that process? This is how I have always done things, but I'm wondering whether there are others who work the same way and if there's a methodological reason to choose this approach.

[UPDATE] I appreciate the wise replies. Some of you have given me the courage to change some plans.
