White student trying to get black teacher fired for using the N-word

I don’t know if anyone else is seeing this in the news but I am appalled beyond words.

There is a story out of Florida where a student is trying to get a teacher fired because he used the N-word. The teacher, who is black, was teaching Toni Morrison’s *Beloved*, a Pulitzer Prize winner, and used the word in the context of discussing the book. The word was not directed at any student.

The student went to administration and the boy’s parents are calling for the teacher to be fired.

I have so many problems with this. First of all, using the N-word in the context of a classroom discussion is entirely fine in my opinion, if the student was using a racial slur at a student there would be an issue. In this case, the word was used appropriately. This also just further proves you can’t say *anything* without offending someone. I don’t know what the solution is but I know any discussion of race, even read out of a textbook, is ripe for being fired or being called a bigot.

I also have a huge problem with the student and parents being snowflakes who can’t handle even a discussion of racial slurs in the classroom. I don’t really even know what to say, it’s just really offensive.

Lastly, I think this is a slippery slope. If a teacher can be fired for saying a racial slur in the classroom, can a teacher be fired for teaching a book with slurs? Can a teacher be fired for discussing the N-word itself?

This just makes me so angry and I don’t know what to even say. I’m going to have to police myself more even though I think I’m being perfectly reasonable and in no way a bigot.

Also, this wasn’t in an English class, this was in an art class. Apparently the teacher was discussing the book in the context of art.

Edit: I should’ve made it clearer, the student was white and the teacher was black.
