Your thoughts on a potential hybrid brain?

From memory, the idea was first floated by a neuroscientist at a conference in the early 2000s. I can't recall what timeframes were discussed in terms of the potential achievement of this, but it was presumed to be a relatively distant goal, likely mid century. This idea is something that has been at the back of my mind for a while.

I presumed this was an idea of something to be done when what I term "blood-based" AI isn't close enough to human cognition to better sim people, and that really with the first full human brain scan that would be a moot point, but I was thinking this could be something that is done at an earlier point in time.

Doing the 80/20 idea of bringing in a few key AI pieces to the human brain may provide us with faster leaps in terms of creating a more powerful human brain, as opposed to bringing the AI side up to human cognition. It raised a number of questions including how they would be linked, how they would communicate, how would something even be bridged with the existing brain architecture.

Has there been any more recent discussion on this, or is this something that has gone to the wayside? If anyone is aware of anything on this topic, I would appreciate leads.
