The United States was at its height, perhaps it would never be surpassed, when it collapsed. No one knows the exact reason, and everyone has an opinion. Some blamed the politicians, some blamed the corporations, some blamed the Russians. In the end, it didn’t matter.

100 years later, the country is united once more, and if it’s not at its former height, at least it’s moving in the right direction. The capitol is in Chicago, the old capitol having been abandoned and left to decay.

President Jameson looked out over the city, a brief smile on his face. He had spent his entire life working towards this, and now he could see the fruits of his labour. He stepped back and sat at his desk, his son standing behind him.

“Dad, I don’t know if this is right.” He said, an old familiar refrain.

Jameson sighed inwardly. He had explained this countless times. “Better one stable country where everyone knows their place than a patchwork of squabbling and starving city states.” He said, trying to keep his voice level.

“Would you ever have imagined the US like this? How can you do this? You’re destroying everything the US once stood for!”

Jameson had long since given up pointing out that the US at its height had been responsible for many of the same things he was implementing now, just on a worldwide scale.

“Will, for the last time, this is what is best for the country, and the world at large. We have a duty to bring the world out of this dark age, and we can’t do that if we’re all fighting each other. Go back to the safehouse. I have work to do.”

Will didn’t answer, he just turned and left.

Jameson let out a soft breath. He had known from the start that this would be a hard road to travel, but he had never expected it to be this hard. He really was alone, and now even Will, the only family he had left, was turning against him.

“Sir, shall I send for dinner?” An aide asked, breaking the spell.

“Yes, please. I’m not going to make it down to the dining room tonight.”

The aide nodded. “Of course, Mr. President.”

Jameson turned back to the papers on his desk. So much to do, and not much time left to do it in.

---

Now, the leader who united the country, President Jameson, is dead. His son Will succeeded him, and promises to dismantle all of the prior Presidents changes to society. Will, however, spent his life inside the presidential safehouse, and has never really experienced life in this new society, where everyone’s needs are met and the world is slowly healing. Will promises to bring stability and prosperity back to the country, but many citizens are worried, as the country has been improving since President Jameson came to power.

How does the country change under President Will, and how do the citizens react to the changes he makes?
