Never been a fan of flying. Even with this newfound anxiety about flying, I still know it’s one of the safest ways to travel. I needed to fly for work purposes, so here I am posting this.

I boarded a 9am morning flight. It was uneventful, and soon we took off. I had a window seat, and the woman next to me kept herself occupied with a crossword puzzle. I was preparing to watch a movie on my phone when I noticed something disturbing. The man across the aisle had his head tilted back and there was only an empty space where his eyes once were. I couldn't bear to look into empty sockets, so I looked away.

As we hit cruising altitude, the pilot mentioned that we should expect slight turbulence and the flight attendants began making their rounds. The woman with the crossword was looking directly at me, and she spoke just above a whisper. “Don’t look at the other passengers. They’re not like the rest of us.”

I looked out the window and couldn't help but think of the man with no eyes. The empty space where his peepers once resided lingered in my mind. The flight attendants were walking down the aisle and I noticed something odd about their cart. It was covered with a blanket, but it looked as if there were objects sticking out of it.

One of the flight attendants stopped at our row, and the woman with the crossword looked up and smiled. She looked at me and whispered “act normal.”

“Something to drink, ma’am?” The flight attendant asked.

The woman ordered a diet coke and the flight attendant handed her a plastic cup filled with soda. I declined the offer. The flight attendant began to walk away, but not before she glared at me. As she walked away, I couldn’t help myself, I looked into the cart. Amongst the peanuts and soda were a few gasoline containers and a fire extinguisher.

I looked out the window, scared of what might happen if I looked at another passenger or the flight attendants. The woman with the crossword finished her soda and handed the empty cup to the man with no eyes. It was then that I noticed he had a name tag, it read Jeff.

Jeff took the plastic cup and smiled. There was no blood, no scars, just smooth, tan flesh where his eyes once were. I felt warm, and I began sweating, so I used the in-seat fan to cool myself. The woman sitting next to me put her hand on my wrist and whispered “you need to act normal.” So, I turned around and tried to make small talk with her. We discussed our favorite movies, music, and hobbies. She seemed like a very nice lady, and her name was Sarah.

As the flight attendants made another round, I noticed a young child giggling and watching a movie on a portable DVD player. I looked at the movie and saw that it was the movie Event Horizon. I loved that movie, and I was about to say that to Sarah when she whispered. “Don’t look at the other passengers.”

I looked back at Sarah and tried to act normal, but it felt as if an eternity had passed since boarding. I asked Sarah how long she had been flying. She smiled and leaned in close. “I don’t know. I don’t think this flight has ever ended.”

I was stunned. She had been flying for over five hours and the flight hadn’t ended. I looked out the window and saw nothing but endless clouds. I looked back over at her. “Are you serious? Where are you going?”

“Chicago,” she whispered. I looked at her hand, resting on my wrist, and saw a boarding pass and a ticket tucked into her sleeve. I pulled it out and read it. Departure: Los Angeles, Destination: Chicago. Departure: December 15, 1967. Also included was her one-way ticket and the date stamped on it was December 15, 1967.

I looked back at her in shock, and she spoke as if she could read my mind. “This flight has been going on for almost one-hundred-and-fifty years. It never ends.”

I felt a cold breeze rush past my face and could have sworn I heard an eerie, haunting whisper in my ear “ONE-HUNRD-AND-FIFTY YEARS! ONE-HUNRD-AND-FIFTY YEARS! ONE-HUNDRED-AND-FIFTY YEARS! ONE-HUNDRED-AND-FIFTY YEARS!”

I looked over at Jeff and he was still looking at the ceiling with an empty smile and just smooth flesh where his eyes should have been. I looked over at the flight attendants, and they were looking straight at me. I looked back at Sarah, and she whispered “act normal.” So I did.

I asked her if she liked the movie Event Horizon. She had laughed and said that it was too violent. As we talked, I noticed the little boy had turned off his DVD player and was looking at me. He looked scared and had tears in his eyes. But before I could look away, he whispered “help me.”

I felt a sharp elbow to my ribs and I yelped in pain. It was Sarah. I looked at her and she whispered “look away, act normal.” I did as I was told.

There was a slight jolt, and I looked out the window to see thick black clouds. We began to descend, and the pilot came over the intercom. We were about to land. I couldn’t believe it, I almost didn’t believe in the hellish nightmare Sarah had described to me. As we landed and the plane touched down, I let out a sigh of relief.

It wasn’t until that moment, I noticed the seatbelt signs never turned off. As I stood up, I noticed there was no turbulence, we were already on the ground. I looked out the window, and all I saw was darkness.

I looked over at Sarah, and she was sitting with her head down. The flight attendants walked up to my row. Again, I noticed the strange objects sticking out of the cart. The closest attendant looked at me and grinned. She placed her hand on my shoulder and pushed me back into my seat.

“Where do you think you’re going?” she asked. I stammered when I tried to respond. “I’m going to my destination.”

“How about you stay here with us?” The other flight attendant asked as she placed her hand on my other shoulder. I pushed both of their hands off me and stood up again. As I did, Jeff got out of his seat and stood in front of me. His empty eye sockets glared at me and I backed up into my seat in fear.

The fight attendants placed their hands on my shoulders, again. “Sit down and buckle up. This flight could get bumpy.” I did as I was told. I looked over at the woman and she had her head down and was praying. I looked out the window, and we were getting ready to take off. The pilot made his announcement over the intercom, welcomed us aboard, and we took off again, into the sky.

As we hit cruising altitude, the pilot came over the intercom and made another announcement. “There will be slight turbulence throughout this flight. We will never land.”

The plane shook a little, and I felt like I was going to pass out. I looked over at Sarah, and she was still praying. I looked out the window, and I couldn't stop crying. I’m writing this on my computer, and the flight attendants haven’t made it to my row yet.

The flight has been going on for twenty-nine hours and twenty-five minutes. I don’t think this flight will ever end.
