I drove 400 miles yesterday and only saw one other driver using windshield wipers and headlights at the same time.

When I learned to drive (in the 80s), I was taught that it’s illegal to drive at nighttime without headlights. I’m sure it doesn’t apply to all states, but it was illegal in my state. And you clearly can’t drive at night without lights.

When I started driving in the rain, I was taught that you had to have headlights on, along with your wipers. They could ticket you for not having your headlights on while your wipers are on.

As you probably know, your headlights are supposed to be on, along with your wipers, while driving in the rain. I didn’t realize that this was only for my state. I now live in a different state, which I’m pretty sure still requires headlights while running your wipers.

I drove about 400 miles yesterday, and only saw one car with windshield wipers and headlights running at the same time. I was driving on the highway the whole time. The rain was pretty heavy.

I remember hearing a podcast of a former police officer who said that it was frustrating to see all the cars without headlights on while either driving at night or in the rain. He went on to say that, yes, windshield wipers count as nighttime driving. It’s illegal to drive at night without headlights. So you need to have headlights on if either it’s nighttime or you’re using your windshield wipers.

I’m not sure if this applies in all states, but my two states do require headlights to be on while driving at nighttime or while your wipers are on. This either means that it’s illegally to drive without headlights while using your wipers, or there are a lot of cars without working headlights.
