The cheating I’m seeing right now is so different than anything we’ve faced before

The AI stuff is so much more sophisticated than anything we’ve faced. I’ve been teaching since 2010 and over the years I’ve learned to recognize many types of cheating. Plagiarism software has gotten exponentially better and I’d say at this point it can catch 90% of students who don’t use proper citations. This AI stuff, however, is something else.

It not only generates seemingly well-written sentences, it responds to prompts in a way that seems like the student has a good grasp of the material. It actually answers the question almost perfectly.

I’ve been teaching seniors for the past decade and have always felt confident after grading 3-4 assignments from a struggling student that I could pinpoint whether or not they were truly struggling with the coursework.

There was a student I was genuinely worried about this fall. I had extra help with them. I worked with the student’s resource teacher. I had them retake two assessments because they were adamant that they had mastered the material, even though their grades didn’t reflect that.

Well, just today I was going through their recent grades and I realized that I had failed to run a plagiarism check on that second assessment retake. When I ran it, I saw that the child caught plagiarism software in the act and actually removed the citation to the AI program.

Their paper went from a 70% to a 4% when I ran the check. This is a student I had to fight their parents to fail. I argued that the student just wasn’t getting the material and they needed to repeat the course.

I’m just so exhausted and defeated. I feel like I can’t trust anything I see at this point. I have students who I’m almost positive are using the AI, but I can’t prove it, even with these tools.

I’m just wondering what other teachers are seeing out there.
