How the fuck do I navigate this situation?

So a friend of mine from high school got married a few months ago and I got invited to the wedding. I was in town visiting for the holidays and showed up.

Turns out the reception was getting a bit crowded so instead of having another table for a single person, they sat me down at a table with some of his old friends and acquaintances from high school. The hostess explained that it was a “friends table” because they all knew each other.

Turns out it was an all women’s table. I said hi and sat down, and it was instantly a “who are you, why are you here?” situation. I explained I was a friend from high school and they looked at each other and said “oh, you must be x’s friend” (I’m not x, doesn’t matter how I told them that)

I tried to make small talk and it got weird. It started with “what’s your relationship to the couple?” And me replying, and then they all giggling at each other, and they tell me I’m cute (I’m not, it’s condescending), and then one by one they start asking me out to dinner/drinks after the reception.

Then they all turn on me and start asking invasive questions about my relationship with the groom. When I tell them I’m not in a relationship with him, they start asking about the other people I’ve dated, and then why I don’t have a partner. I tell them I’m not really interested in long term dating and they start asking me about the type of women I like, and then I say I’m not interested in dating women.

And then it got nasty. They started talking about my body, making snide remarks about my appearance, and telling me that men don’t ask other men out and I’m not a man.

I tried to tell them I was sorry I ruined their night and went to find a new table. They followed me to a few and I ended up having to sit at the bar and order a drink to get away from them.

Groom and bride were busy and bride’s parents were angry with me for sitting at their table. I left as soon as I could.

What the fuck just happened?
