A stranger came into my house while my husband and I were asleep.

Our house is like others in the 1950s-60s suburban developments across the U.S. It's a ranch built on a concrete slab with very, very thin walls. This means that we can pretty much hear anything that happens anywhere inside or outside the house. We also keep our bedroom door open, because our house is shaped like an 'L,' and our bedroom is at one end of the short arm of the 'L,' and our front door is at the other. This means that if someone tries to enter our front door, we will hear it clearly.

I woke up in the middle of the night one night, and heard a noise that obviously wasn't my husband. The noise sounded like it was coming from the back of the house. I said, "Hello?" and a man said, "Hello?"

I replied, "Who is that?"

He replied, "Is Laura there?"

I said, "No, she isn't. But you need to get out of my house."

He said, "Okay," and walked through my front door. My husband and I each thought that the other one was dealing with the intruder, until I heard the front screen door close. My husband and I both jumped out of bed, and ran to the front door. We opened it in time to see a man walking up the street.

My husband wanted to chase him down, but I really didn't want my husband to end up dead because of my fear. We called the police, who didn't seem too terribly interested.

The only reason that I can think of why the man who entered my house was looking for Laura, is that when we bought our house, we bought it from a woman named Laura.

We moved out of that house fairly shortly after the incident, and have never heard from the trespasser.

So, man who walked through my front door, let's not meet again.

Edit in response to questions: My front door was locked, but it wasn't terribly secure. It was an old wooden door, with an old lock. I always thought that the lock wouldn't withstand much force at all. I also think that the man may have twisted the door a bit to open it, because after the incident, the door never fit right in the frame. It rubbed against the threshold, and wouldn't shut right.
