Don’t believe the hype

I’m a four year Ruby developer and I’m working on my first project with Chat GPT. I knew it was in beta and should expect weird things, but four hours in I know where I stand on four things:

1. The hype is way out of proportion to the quality of the tool
2. The general public is not ready for this
3. When this tech is improved, it will be amazing
4. I like that this subs seems to be comprised of very optimistic people, but at the same time, this sub needs a major reality check

This AI does not currently understand the world. I’ve moved down an entirely useless rabbit hole of code where it does not understand how to do simple things like accessing data from a Hash. This is frustrating as I’m convinced that my code is right, but the AI says it’s not. The AI is generating Ruby code that is not valid. It’s been four hours and I have nothing to show for it other than disappointment and frustration.

It’s simply not ready. I’m convinced that it will be an amazing tool someday, but it seems like someone in a boardroom said “ship it” before it was ready. I’ve had better luck with Copilot. This is just garbage.

I’ll continue to use it and I’m excited to see it improve, but it is not the answer to all of our prayers. It may never be. It’s a fun novelty, but right now it doesn’t currently understand coding. It takes a lot of time to go back and fix everything that it does wrong.
