Make Up a Life for Yourself and Everyone Around You

I had an idea for a story and then started thinking about it more and realized it could probably be a good writing prompt or even a game of sorts.

Imagine a normal everyday situation. You can choose what it is. Maybe you’re in a coffee shop, grocery store, fast food restaurant, school, airport, or office building for instance. Now imagine the people around you and what their lives might be like. All of them. That person behind the counter at Starbucks. The guy sitting in the cubicle next to you. The kid walking to class across campus. The lady picking out apples at the grocery store. They all have lives and you should decide who they are, what kind of car they drive or if they can’t afford one, how they dress, their personalities, if they have any siblings or pets or kids, etc.

I have a rule for myself to make up a life for at least one person I see every day. I try to choose someone I wouldn’t normally notice. Maybe a garbage man or a homeless guy or the custodian at work. If I notice them, I think about their life. It’s fun and the more I do it, the more interesting the people around me seem. Try it!!!

Also, if you have a good story about this, I’d love to hear it!

P.S. I swear I saw a homeless guy fly into Seattle-Tacoma airport and then panhandle for enough money to buy a ticket to Chicago.
