I had no idea how much money my husband made until he asked me to borrow money

I am still reeling from this. Tho we file our taxes together and I see our combined income I have no idea what a month he brings home. Tho we have been married for 15 years we keep our finances separate. <br><br>But last month we had some unexpected expenses I unexpectedly lost my job and we were still reeling from that. He asked me to lend him 4000$. <br><br>I laughed because we had maybe 500$ in savings. After my laughter stopped I asked him how much he made a month. He told me 4k a month after taxes. With that amount how could you still barely have any savings? <br><br>I make way less than him at 2200$ a month but despite the loss of income, I couldn't help but feel better that we were able to at least still have savings. <br><br>Now I am wondering what else he is hiding from me<br><br>**Edit:** Tho some of you talk about the danger of a separate account. Tho we have separate bank accounts our debts are together. The mortgage and house expenses that is paid from that account. <br><br>I am surprised to see so many women happy to be supported by their husbands. I understand why but for me personally I always felt like I was a disappointment to my mother if I couldn't support myself. As I grew older I found this to be a problem as I was stuck with an abusive boyfriend for a long time because I didn't want to leave. So after I left him I vowed to never rely on a man or anyone else for money ever again.
