The previous tenant of my new flat left a survival guide. I might need some help.

I posted a similar story to this sub a while ago, but I have now scrubbed the internet clean of any trace of that post, and I ask of you to do the same if you read it. I will also not be going into too much detail about anything. I live alone, and you will see why that's a problem.

I moved into a new flat, and the realtor told me that the previous tenant died under odd circumstances. He looked at me strange when he said it, but I wrote it off as being shocked by the sudden loss. He was an older guy, so I guess it made sense.

He handed me a note while telling me this, and said to read it later. I forgot about it until I was alone in the flat. He had written on it "Survival guidelines".

It was a long, handwritten note from the previous tenant. I will write it out word for word for you.

***

You're my brother. I'm glad you won the flat. I have left this note for you before I kill myself.

I have lived here for 10 years, and the first years were great. But things started to happen to me, and I could not take it anymore.

People walk in the hallway at random hours of the day, and they will knock on your door. It's not postmen or the milkman or anything like that. It's people who ring the doorbell over and over again. They won't break in or anything. But they will continue to knock for hours, days even.

I once didn't answer the door for two weeks, out of curiosity to see how long they would keep knocking, and it went on for months. Sometimes they stop for a few days, but they always come back. I have heard other tenants open their door, and the people who knock will not say anything to them. They just keep knocking on their door.

There is also a lot of noise in the walls, and I'm not talking about loud neighbors or rodents. The walls will creak and groan, and I have heard footsteps and voices that sound like they are INSIDE the walls. It will also pop, almost like someone is clapping their hands.

Sometimes it will be quiet for a long time. Sometimes several months on end. I'm not sure why it does this, but I have noticed a pattern. When it's quiet, and you're alone at home, the power will go out. Not a common power outage, but the fuse box will be completely fried. I had to call an electrician, and he thought someone had broken into my flat and blown it.

I have heard footsteps outside my door while the power is out, but they are not random. It's slow, and it sounds like someone is walking the length of my entire flat. I have stood by my front door, in the dark, and I'm sure that I have heard a hand grip the doorknob, and twist it. But it never opens.

The longest it has been quiet for is three years. I'm not sure why it is quiet for that long, but I think it has to do with neighbors. I have heard that if someone dies in the building, the noises will stop for years.

If you hear any of this, and you still decide to stay, I wish you the best of luck.

Yours

[Your name]

***

I scrubbed the post, my profile and everything. I e-mailed the mods to ask to delete my entire account, and I set up a burner phone number and a burner email, just in case.

I have also removed any trace of my brothers name, in case whatever it is that's going on here knows to look there.

I will not be replying to any comments, nor will I post any updates. But I thought that you guys should know.

I have lived here for 2 years now, and nothing has happened. It's completely quiet, and I'm starting to think that my brother just went insane.

But what if he didn't?

I am alone right now. Very alone. And I'm not sure what to do.

Wish me luck.

Bye.
