When one tries to find an exact definition of "Neoliberalism", one finds it very challenging or perhaps impossible to do so. It is such a complex, extremely nuanced term that draws upon a wide range of political, economic, philosophical, and social ideologies which vary from one person to the next. For example, a European social democrat might call an American New Deal liberal "a neoliberal", but the American liberal might call the European "a neoliberal". Even more, people who call themselves "neoliberals" seem to disagree about what it means to be "a neoliberal". For instance, look at James Buchanan's ideas about free market capitalism and then look at Hayek's (the two most prominent "neoliberals"). What is the common thread? or perhaps there is none apart from an extremely loose belief in "free markets" and the benefits of deregulation, but not complete laissez-faire economics.

So, what is the exact definition of "neoliberalism"? Does anyone know?
