How are kings born kings

When kings were born, were the only kids to be kings if they were the son of the king? I find it wierd how some kings would be so damn lucky yet others were born as the son of a shoe maker and rose to be kings yet others like Louis X1V was born the son of a king and became the most well known king in France.
