Why did “tactical” become a “bad” word?

I don’t really care about the politics of guns. There are tons of us who own them, and there are tons of people who think they should be banned. I’m not here for that.

I’ve owned guns for many years. I used to call them “tactical.” It just made sense: “tactical” is a synonym for “military.” Soldiers, even those who don’t see combat, are trained in tactical maneuvers. And soldiers are the ones who carry “assault rifles”. So “tactical” made sense.

I think many people agree with me on this: 15-20 years ago, there were tons of “tactical” gear stores, even “tactical coffee shops.”

But now “tactical” is a joke. “Tacticool.” All of those “tactical” gear stores are gone.

I assume it’s due to over-saturation, and the fact that all these “tactical” gear stores were just snake oil salesmen preying on people’s fears and lack of knowledge in an attempt to make a profit. But it’s interesting to see how “tactical” became such a “bad” word.
