CMV: Expecting people to mask and social distance in grocery stores is still reasonable

I have to go to a grocery once a week to feed myself. In my area 90% of the people in the grocery store are not masked, and most people do not make an effort to stay away from others. This is the case even though there is an mask mandate and signs all over the walls saying everyone must be masked.

Recently I've heard from a few people that grocery shopping is one of those things we all have to do, and that if someone is afraid they should just stay home.

I believe that the grocery store is one of the few indoor places left in which the majority of the population actually does have to go once in a while, which is exactly why it should be as safe as possible to the greatest extent that it can be within our power. I don't think "stay home and don't eat" is a valid solution to this problem when the simple act of putting on a mask and not walking close behind someone else is enough to help control the spread.
