**Google is pushing to stop Safari and iPhone from becoming synonymous with ‘the internet.’**

***

In open letters to Apple CEO Tim Cook, Google announced that it is implementing a major change to how millions of people access the web directly from their iPhones. The company is now building a new toolbar at the bottom of the Google home screen, which is essentially a search box integrated with features you’ll find in a traditional web browser.

Google’s redesign is about bringing Safari and Google Search closer together, and the company even asked Apple to do all of this. Not because Apple and Google have mended old wounds, but because Google says it’s becoming a problem that people think ‘Google’ is ‘the internet.’

That’s why the Google home screen is getting a major redesign.

Instead of simply typing your search terms, you’ll get a row of tabs that allow you to immediately go to Google search results, Google Lens (its visual search engine), Maps, or other places on the web without having to create a new search.

Google is working with Apple to ensure that this new toolbar is compatible with Safari and gives you a faster internet experience, with recommendations for places you regularly visit and the ability to quickly see your search history and recent searches. The company hopes this change will make browsing the internet more streamlined and efficient, but it also has a bigger motive.
