I'm a relatively new Boy Scout leader with a troop in the Boston area and we’ve been tasked with organizing the camping trip for the scouts this year. Boy Scout camping trips can be a great way to build skills and strengthen the bonds between children, especially as they get older and need to work together to prepare meals, break camp, and keep the campsite hygienic. I have 2 boys A & B that are going on this camping trip. Boy A has been with the troop for 2 years now and he’s mostly quiet and a very kind and respectful kid. The Boy B joined the troop last fall and is a very respectful kid that’s eager to learn new skills. He’s a bit taller and stronger than the Boy A which is why we don’t like him being teamed up with Boy A, even if it’s just to set up the tent. I don’t think Boy B is a bad kid. He’s just a 13-year-old boy. He’s really eager to please and wants to do what he’s told, so we can work with him. Boy A is very quiet and that’s okay too, but he’s also very defiant and sometimes refuses to follow instructions. I can’t seem to figure out why he’s so defiant since I don’t really talk to him and I don’t think I ever made him mad. The boys are not great friends and do not sit together at lunch, and we would like to separate them. Unfortunately we have 5 two person tents to house 10 boys and so I have to put them together. What can I do to make this situation work?
