28 F- 4th grade teacher at a private school for students with special needs. I am a trained EMT. I always carry Narcan on me.

Today- a student nearly died in front of me. One of our students at my school is poly substance addicted and has been since they were 7. they brought narcotics to school today. We have a strict no back back policy at my school because of this. Our school goes through a lot to work with parents and students who struggle with addiction.

Today this student decided to take some of the narcotics and put it in their lunch. They ate it and shortly after they began to exhibit overdose symptoms. I recognized them right away and I quickly got the Narcan from my desk and administered a double dose.

This is the first time I have administered narcan outside of a training exercise.

The student survived, they are in a medically induced coma and will be okay.

I am still processing what happened. I keep thinking “what if”- What if I didn’t have my narcan? What if I didn’t recognize the symptoms? What if I wasn’t an EMT?

I am just still in absolute shock. And I am so grateful that I carry narcan and that I am an EMT. That training saved a childs life today.

If you are an educator and don’t have narcan at least once a week, please please do. It may be the difference of life and death.

Edit: the student is being removed from the school but will still recieve services from the district. They will go to a different school that is better equipped to deal with substance abuse.
