AITA for giving my dad the perfect grandchild as a gift for visiting

My dad is a very racist, bigoted, straight, republican man. I am none of those things. I’m a men’s volleyball player who is queer and about 70% of my team is queer too, so that rubs on my dad a lot and we have a hard time getting along.

My dad is remarried but has no children of his own. He never wanted any, but when I was born, he said “I guess I’m built to be a dad because I love this little guy so much”. He has always spoiled me and spent a lot of time with me. When I come out as queer, that almost stopped completely. He doesn’t acknowledge my relationships or my identity, men who he barely knows are more important to him than my husband. It’s a very hard thing to navigate.

My step-mom who is a lovely woman decided it would be nice if they could come up to visit us and meet our pets and see what our house is like for the first time. They live in another state so they don’t come often. My dad is still pretty happy to just speak to my step-mom and ignore me during their visits.

I decided to have a little bit of fun with their visit this time and arranged with one of my teammates for his son to come over. His son, we’ll call him Max, is 5 and is biracial and has 2 dads. He is the most precious little boy and I thought my dad would just absolutely hate him. Max is also the ultimate clingie, he gets attached easily, and I knew my dad would absolutely squirm over how much he would have to interact with him.

My dad and step-mom show up, and Max is already there. I introduce them, and Max comes up and gives my dad a big hug. My dad is squirming in his seat almost immediately. I men ask if he’d like a grandchild to play with when he’s here, and he is flabbergasted that I’d even ask that. He says yes, but immediately regrets it. Max is attached to my dad for the whole visit. He sits on my dad’s lap, he clings to my dad, he gives him a big kiss goodbye, and my dad barely says a word to anyone the whole time he’s there.

On our way back to their hotel, my dad was quiet and contemplative, while my step-mom is just gushing about how cute Max is. When we come back to our house, almost the first thing my dad says is “I don’t know what kind of game you thought you were playing, but that was inappropriate. I don’t know what kind of father that makes me, but I’m telling you right now you’re an asshole for doing that to me”.

AITA for trying to teach my dad a lesson by giving him the “perfect grandchild” even if it was just for a day?
