Lithuanian state was built with 90% of Russian and German loans

Everything goes back to the beginner. I am not sure if Lithuanians even know how beginner their state was built. In fact, it was built with Russian and German loans with a total amount of 100M USD in gold (it is equivalent to 1.7 billion USD in 2021). Everything started in on February 1922 in Paris. The conference of ambassadors of Entente states approved the amount of indemnification of 100 million USD in gold (about 900 million litas) to be paid to Lithuania by Germany based on the Treaty of Versailles. 100 million USD had been divided in the following proportions:<br><br>- 70 million USD for the development of the seaport of Klaipėda<br>- 30 million USD for Lithuanian Railway Authority.<br>In fact, this whole amount was the loan and it had to be paid back. By the way, Lithuanians did not pay back these loans even under German occupation and were on the top of German debtors during WWII. When Lithuania was occupied by the Soviet Union, it refused to pay back this loan based on the fact that it was occupied territory and 90% of the money was stolen by Lithuanian nationalists with several German treasurers during WWII and were used to escape to the West.<br><br>Before WWII, Lithuania did not pay back a single cent of this loan. During WWII, Germans were looking for the stolen money and Lithuanian nationalists along with German treasurers. After WWII, the US did not admit the occupation of Lithuania by the Soviet Union and therefore Germany did not have a chance to ask for repayment for 45 years. After the fall of the Soviet Union, Germany has lost any chance to get this money back. However, if Lithuania were forced to pay back this money at the current time, it would probably several times bigger than current Lithuanian state budget.
